Dick’s Sporting Goods is a staple in the retail sporting goods industry. As with the changing of the times they are also evolving, not only to meet customer expectations but exceed them. Dicks has started opening stores with a more interactive experiential concept called the “House of Sports” and it is being received very well by its customer base. The House of Sports concepts have a batting cage, rock climbing wall, golf simulators and equipment services, such as tennis racquet stringing and baseball glove steaming. The concept has been proven to boost the retailer’s bottom line and Dicks says that it is bullish on this store design and will roll out 20 more House of sports over the next few years. Long-term, they hope to have 75 to 100 of these stores.
The retailer also put-up great earnings with net sales in Q4 of 2022 up 7.3% year over year. With the new House of Sports roll-out, they have decided to scale back their “Field and Stream” stores. In 2018 they made a corporate decision to stop selling firearms, which received both negative and positive backlash. Although Dicks has decided to take a back seat in the hunting arena, it looks to be a powerhouse with its new House of Sports concept!
