Target is aggressively pursuing a turnaround strategy aimed at reversing declining sales and foot traffic, with technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), playing a central role. During a Q2 earnings call, COO and incoming CEO Michael Fiddelke emphasized the importance of regaining merchandising authority and leveraging technology to enhance speed, customer experience, and operational efficiency. The company is now showcasing tangible examples of AI integration across various areas, such as merchandise development and third-party marketplace management, to support human creativity and improve decision-making. Target’s Chief Information and Product Officer, Prat Vemana, highlighted how AI tools like Target Trend Brain assist merchants in trend analysis and product ideation, enabling faster collection creation while preserving the company’s design expertise.

Furthermore, Target is utilizing AI to streamline its marketplace vendor review process and improve demand forecasting for the holiday season. The retailer has deployed over 10,000 AI licenses across its workforce since May, including training sessions with OpenAI, to ensure employees are equipped to use these advanced tools effectively. The company’s adoption of generative AI and flexible, model-agnostic approaches through platforms like ThinkTank demonstrate its commitment to innovation and operational agility. These technological initiatives aim to enhance product positioning, reduce customer frustration, and foster workforce productivity—key elements in Target’s broader effort to revitalize its retail performance amid evolving market dynamics.
